Office of the Spokesperson of the Government of Sudan
KHARTOUM- Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok said on Thursday that the millions of demonstrators who took to the streets across the country confirmed the people’s adherence to the democratic transition of the country.
This came during his speech the evening after millions of Sudanese demonstrated across the country to demand the protection of the revolution, the completion of its tasks and the realization of its demands.
Hamdok explained, “The millions who came out today in the states, cities and villages onfirmed their adherence to civil democratic transformation while carrying banners of the revolution’s slogans of “freedom, peace and justice.”
“The people have said that there is no retreat from the civil democratic transformation, and the commitment to walk the path of freedom and democracy, and there is no going back,” he added.
Hamdok pledged to “continue to work to complete the democratic transition and achieve the goals of the revolution, thanking the police forces for protecting the demonstrations.
Earlier on Thursday, millions of Sudanese rallied in Khartoum and the rest of the states, carrying national flags and slogans calling for civilian rule, including, “Either civilian authority, or eternal revolution,” and “Power is in the hands of the people.”
The demonstrations took place in the cities of Khartoum, Bahri, Omdurman, Kassala, Gedaref, Khashm al-Qirba, El Fasher, Nyala, El Daein, El Geneina, Sennar, Singa, Damazin, Madani, Managil, El Obeid, and Al-Nuhud.
The protests were launched to demand civilian rule, an end to the partnership with the military in the Transitional Government, the completion of a peaceful democratic transition, and the rejection of the calls by the ‘National Charter’ and the military component in the Transitional Government. Calls were also made to dissolve the government and form another.
A number of ministers also took part in the government most notably the Minister of Cabinet Affairs Khalid Omar Yousif, Minister of Transportation Mirghani Musa, and Industry Minister Ibrahim Al-Sheikh.
Since a month ago, tensions have been escalating between the military and civilian components of the Transitional Government, due to military leaders accusing the political leaders of seeking only their personal interests and allegations of orchestrating the coups in the country. This comes on the heels of a foiled coup attempt on September 21.
Since August 21, 2019, Sudan has been witnessing a 53-month transitional period that ends with holding elections in early 2024. During the transition period power is shared by the army, civilian forces and armed movements that signed a peace agreement with the government, on October 3, 2020.
